Wax being one of the oldest and most versatile natural substances ever used by man. As per the records, its earliest use was by the ancient Egyptians, who used wax (ca. 3000 BC) in the mummification process and for protective coverings.

Wax was considered as a medium class product till it became a topic of research along with soaps, oils and fats among the scientist community in 1823. It had earned its position as an important raw material in the beginning of the Industrial revolution, seeking a high quantity of demand. Various important class of waxes viz. Ceresin, Montan, Paraffin were produced from Ozocerite, Eocene lignite and crude petroleum through process like mining and refining.

1935 saw the production of synthetic waxes and giving birth to various new process of production. The Fischer ? Tropsch process. High Pressure process and The low pressure Ziegler process were some of the leading ones that came into being simultaneously.

Apart from the oligomer and polymer properties in most of the common waxes, they may be different from the single chemical compound family and becoming a complex group of chemicals viz. Carboxyl, alcohol, ester, keto, and amide.

The production of modern and more useful composition of waxes like that of petroleum wax was the reason to justify the earlier definition of wax in chemistry which says - waxes are esters of long-chain carboxylic acids with long-chain alcohols. This was actually not applicable to presently available all classes of the product which was now an important raw material in various useful industries like lubricants, cosmetics etc.
